DX Cameras (15 x 24 mm)

DX (15 X 24mm) lenses require a smaller image circle than a full frame lenses. All lenses produce a circular image regardless of how the viewer crops the image and this image is referred to as the image circle. A DX lens produces an image circle which is 2/3's the size of the full frame image. Because the sensor is smaller, the final frame of a DX image is approximately 15mm high by 24mm wide. Therefore, if a lens produces an image circle larger than 15mm, the image will be cropped on the top and bottom. If the image circle is larger than 24mm, the image will be cropped on all four sides. Conversely, if the image circle is 15mm or less, the image will fit in the frames as a circle framed in black. This framing must be taken into account when choosing a lens for 360 degree panoramic photography.
